Let's take a brief look into the mind of a Latino immigrant (in his home country). To get to the U.S., he has two options: 1) Take chances waiting for a visa or green card, or 2) make a run for the border and cross without documentation. What makes the most logical sense?
The driving cause for every decision a man makes is his personal desire. When a man leaves his home in Mexico to risk his life for a slim hope of making a brighter future for his family, he desires that idealic future more than anything else he has ever known.
Why in the world would you sacrifice everything you've ever known for a chance to live in a country you've never even visited? The Dean of Biomedical Engineering and I had a short discussion last Saturday that brought to mind my intention for researching immigration. Americans shouldn't just want an answer to stopping the flow of illegal aliens or immigration reform, they should take action and become part of the answer! John McCain and Ted Kennedy have drafted a bill for immigration reform that should at least turn on some red lights in the minds of avid thinkers. Are you listening, America? I have done the hard part (research) for you, so read about some of the hype. To be honest, some Americans are trigger happy and would like to shove illegal aliens right into the ocean, but irrational opinions are trivial compared to the cold hard facts for an issue that affects the future of some 11 million people. I am offering you free advice: if you have a brain, use it! Don't you care what your nation may look like ten, twenty, or one hundred years from now?
If you know what you believe or are just searching for a cause, talk about it! Communication spurs thought, and you may be the link that connects indifferent individuals to a cause. Why not now? Why not immigration?
